Good morning everyone!
Have you ever wanted to help someone out from far away, like maybe a friend or relative, or even someone across the hall? Something easy to show, but hard to explain? Wouldn’t it be great if you could just record your screen and email them a video with your step-by-step instructions?
Well, thanks to Freescreencast.com, now you can! Freescreencast.com is not the only tool out there; back in August, I blogged about Jing Project, another cool free utility (that is Mac and Windows, BTW). For some reason though, I found Freescreencast.com simpler to use. In minutes, I was able to create instructions for our staff about how to use the technology resource reservation system I designed several years ago. No more lengthy memos! Just click and watch. What could be easier?
Here’s a demo showing how easy it is to create a screencast. As you can see, you can even embed them into blogs. Crazy fun!
To be fair, I did encounter some errors when trying to record full-screen, but other than that, the process was painless and straightforward. This tool does not have the functionality you’ll find in tools like Camtasia but that’s not the point. Imagine rolling this software out to every computer in your school and having kids create libraries of instructional videos. Have you priced a site license for Camtasia recently? Ouch! There’s got to be a better way, and free is a better way!
Hope this helps,

Hi Kevin.
I’m the founder and primary developer of freescreencast.com.
Thanks for the kind blog entry.
I would encourage anyone with errors or other problems with the software to contact us at contact@freescreencast.com.
I could go into a long technical boring explanation of why the software has technical problems, but instead I’ll say we are hard at work at a ‘Version 2′ that eliminates the dependency upon Windows Media Encoder and by association a whole host of problems (read: bugs).
That having been said, this version works for almost everyone.
I’d love to hear about your experiences and thoughts as you use the software and website more.
As a side note: I lived in the cities for a few years and was a frequent visitor to friends at Carleton College. Northfield is a great town.
