  • Giving Thanks (and more)

    Good morning everyone,

It’s Thanksgiving Day, no one’s up yet … and I don’t plan to do much of anything today other spend it with my family as we enjoy a great meal and the entire three seasons of The Adventures of Pete & Pete together). [In case you were unaware, Pete & Pete is arguably the finest television show ever produced.] But I wanted to take a moment to reflect and share some thanks. Where to begin…

I woke up this morning thinking about how great it was to have our oldest daughter Jamie home safe from college for the holiday, and everyone else in our family (extended and otherwise) healthy and present. Then I thought of friends and colleagues who have to face the holidays with loved ones far away, often in harm’s way, or worse, colleagues who have tragically lost loved ones. I wonder what their Thanksgiving(s) will be like?

I thought about the great meal we’ll be having together, and all the blessings we’ve received, and the great fortune I have to be employed in a career I truly love, one that matters and nourishes my soul. Then I thought about those less fortunate around the world, and I remembered how Lee Kolbert gave me $25 to lend via Kiva last year (as part of Karl Fisch’s Team Shift Happens). So, today, again inspired by Karl I paid that kindness forward, and hope those people will, too.

We are all so fortunate in this country, wrapped up in our own busy lives, it’s so easy to lose sight of what really matters, and when that happens, we all need to take a step back, think, and be thankful.

    Today’s the day!

    Best, kj

  1. Kevin,

Thanks so much for this post and for sharing Karl’s endeavors also.

Thinking I will join in too!

  2. Thanks Carolyn! I was hemming and hawing about what to do for the Edutwitterverse Gift Exchange and realized this was the perfect gift idea (even if it’s above the $15 suggested amount). I’d be happy to get the same in return, or, as I have requested on Elfster, for my Secret Santa to but as much as they care to at a local toy store and donate the gifts to a local women’s or homeless shelter. I’ve got enough of just about everything but extra Karma is always worth it! :) Happy Thanksgiving! -kj-
