Good morning all,
I’m not a math person. There, I said it. It might be obvious, reading this blog, that I prefer writing. I’m also a lot better at it than I am at math. I often wonder why that is and if I’d be the way I am today if my early education and exposure to math was different.
Case in point: check out Harcourt School Think Math, which came to my attention from the ever-helpful http://www.teacherslovesmartboards.com/. This collection of interactives could have been just the thing to capture my imagination and spark development in math skills! It certainly is a step up from worksheet after worksheet after worksheet – which absolutely was ‘de rigeur’ when I was a kid in the 1970s! Here’s the main screen:
Drilling down to each grade level, you are presented with a series of choices. The youngest learners will need some guidance here, of course…

But once they are in, look out – they’ll be on their way! Here’s an example of a simple counting by 5s activity:

As you would expect from a company that is a part of the education-industrial complex, Harcourt School Think Math is well designed, featuring high-quality activites and intuitive navigation. It’s also completely free, and therefore, is a resource everyone should have in their toolkit to share with students and parents. Sites like these are not a substitute for instruction, but they can be great for review and practice. Who knows, you might even ‘convert’ a right-brained kid like me into a left-brained math fanatic! (…or maybe not, lol)
Hope this helps!
